Music

Every piece here begins the same way: pick a mode, improvise in it, and then do the slow part — get it onto paper. The playing is melodic with chords underneath it, which on four strings is more of a constraint than it sounds. Words, where a piece has them, are written afterwards. Improvising takes enough attention on its own without inventing a lyric at the same time.

Baritone ukulele so far, though not as a rule — there are lute and guitar pieces as well. What reaches this page is whatever I have found the time to write out properly, and there is a good deal more of it than there is here. Engraved with LilyPond and typeset through lyluatex, the package that puts LilyPond scores inside a LuaLaTeX document and one I help maintain.

A LilyPond engraving is a drawing: every glyph is a path, and so are the lyrics it prints under the staff — none of it is text a screen reader can find. Each piece therefore comes with a recording, and where a piece has words they are printed as text on its page, in Dutch with a translation. See accessibility.

Zwerverswals

Vagabond's waltz

Mars / Phrygian on E — 3/4

Found in improvising in 2025, and written down twice. This is the reading in three, and the one that turned out to fit best.

Mars bar. ukel. 2025

The first attempt at getting that improvisation onto paper, in four. A first attempt is what the working title records.
